Planning engagement photos in Lake Tahoe and worried about rain? Here’s why rainy Tahoe engagement sessions in the rain are absolutely perfect

Why Lake Tahoe Engagement Photos in the Rain Are So Beautiful

When most couples think about their Lake Tahoe engagement session, they imagine golden sunshine, warm light on the water, and glowing sunset portraits. But here’s the real secret: Rainy Tahoe engagements are magic in their own way. If the forecast calls for light rain or showers on your session day, it doesn’t mean we have to reschedule! In fact, some of my favorite photos happen when the skies are moody and unpredictable. PS we can absolutely reschedule to another time as well, but hear me out on why rainy days are so great haha 🙂

How Rain Creates Soft, Dreamy Light for Tahoe Engagement Sessions

Rain creates the prettiest natural softbox. The clouds diffuse the sunlight, which means no harsh shadows, no squinting, and the most flattering light for skin tones. It’s like nature’s own editorial setup. I love a good bright sun moment, but there’s something so special about soft, moody light from cloud coverage as well.

The Romantic, Moody Vibes of Rainy Lake Tahoe Landscapes

When the weather shifts, Lake Tahoe turns into a completely different kind of beautiful. The water becomes deeper and moodier, the mountains hide in layers of fog, and the whole lake feels quiet and you typically have the whole place to yourselves. It gives your session a cinematic, romantic vibe that sunshine can’t always create.

The Most Epic Sunsets

One thing I’ve noticed over the years, is if there’s a storm rolling in, typically you get the most EPIC sunsets. This doesn’t always happen of course, but especially in the summer months the clouds will clear and you’ll see the brightest, most incredibly vibrant sunset in your entire life. This is exactly what happened at a wedding I shot over the summer, which you can checkout here: Summer Wedding at 4H Camp

Fog + Rain = Pure Romance

There’s something about the mist rolling over the pines or a bit of fog drifting off the lake that makes your photos feel cozy and effortless. If you love a dramatic, cinematic look, rainy engagements are honestly a dream.

What We Can Do During a Rainy Engagement Session

Play With Umbrellas

Clear umbrellas photograph beautifully and let us keep the focus on you two! They add movement, dimension, and a whimsical touch to your portraits. Also, the umbrellas don’t have to be clear! We can use whatever umbrellas you have in your coat closest and we can shoot with them, making it feel even more natural and realistic.

Lean Into the Adventure

Think ight puddle splashing, brushing rain off each other, laughing between shots—creates candid moments you can’t manufacture. Also THE NOTEBOOK moment?!! Like can you imagine!?

Layer Up With Cozy Textures

Rainy Tahoe engagements are perfect for sweaters, jackets, blankets, and neutral layers that add texture to your photos. Think a chunky scarf or a longer rain jacket, maybe a hat or bag over your flannel and boots. There’s so many ideas we can play with. You’ll stay warm and we’ll get gorgeous lifestyle photos that feel natural and comfortable, and totally you.

Use Tahoe’s Iconic Locations in a New Way

Spots like Sand Harbor, Emerald Bay, and the North Shore look completely different in the rain. The crowds are gone, the atmosphere feels calm, and we often have entire spaces to ourselves.

Should You Postpone Your Engagement Session?

Not always! As long as the rain is light to moderate and safe to shoot in, we can still create something incredible. I always keep an eye on the weather leading up to your session and offer backup times if needed — but many couples end up choosing the rain because they want that unique, intimate look & trust I’ll still deliver incredible photos for them (which ps I always do) 🫶🏼

Rainy Tahoe Engagements Are Unforgettable

At the end of the day, your engagement session is about connection, not the weather. Whether it’s misting, drizzling, or giving us those dramatic storm-cloud moments, Lake Tahoe is stunning in every condition. If you’re up for a little adventure, rainy Tahoe engagements might become your favorite part of this season.

Response from my client Chelsea in these photos:

“Bridgette, we are SO obsessed with the pictures😭 we don’t take a whole lot of pictures together, just bc honestly I’m so bad at remembering to when we go places or do things so these are so so so special to me 🤍 I’m genuinely so amazed with how fun and effortless the pictures we’ve gotten back so far look and also how comfortable you made us feel out there, despite the elements lol. That means more to me than you’ll ever know. Our whole trip this week was nothing short of perfection (truly) and it confirmed to me that we made the right choice choosing to get married in Tahoe, choosing Everline as our venue, and choosing you as our photographer 🥹 Now we can’t wait to see you again next June and do it all over again, except even bigger 😍 & also thank you so so so much for working so hard to get us so many sneak peaks so soon bc I know you’re busy & I also probably talked about seeing some pictures the whole next day to Taylor until you sent them.. that’s why we were literally talking about them when you text me yesterday🤣 we cannot wait to see the rest!!!!” – Chelsea
