Lake Tahoe is an absolute dream location for a proposal. Crystal clear aqua water, mountains all over, forests that go for days that fill the air with the smell of the pine trees, and so much more. You truly can’t go wrong proposing in Lake Tahoe since it has so much to offer! Whether you’re planning a private proposal for the two of you, or want to throw a grand gesture surrounded by loved ones, Lake Tahoe is the place to pop the question. Let’s break down the top locations (in no particular order) for you to propose to your partner in Lake Tahoe!

Emerald Bay is located on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, and is truly one of the top wonders of the world. It’s like the peak of Lake Tahoe with a windy road leading up to it, steep mountains surrounding you, and the clearest, aqua blue water down below. Emerald Bay is truly such an epic location, but comes with it’s pro’s and con’s just like any other spot!
I touch on eloping in Emerald Bay here if you want to learn more about that.
Emerald Bay State Park has truly some of the most breath-taking views, cliff-sides, and so many spots where you can propose! One thing to keep in mind though, is since it is so popular, comes tourists and crowds. Peak summer months this location is filllled with people. My recommendation? Propose in the off season months (fall, winter, or spring) or propose at sunrise! Sunrise always beats the crowds, no matter what season is it. PS the photo taken above was at sunrise in the late summer and it was epic.
Also, if you plan on having your proposal photographed (highly recommend 😉), you will have to secure a photography permit since it’s a state park. This fee is usually around $100. Don’t worry about any of those logistics though, I help all my couples with this and submit the permit for them!

If your vision includes sandy shores and clear turquoise water, large boulders and rocks surrounded by pine trees, Sand Harbor on the northeast shore is thee spot. The dramatic rock formations, gentle waves, and views of the wide-open lake create a vibe that’s both serene and cinematic. This location also requires a permit for photography so if you want to pop the question here, inquire here and I can help you through the entire process!
Sand Harbor is truly the most popular beach in Lake Tahoe and for good reason. There’s so many amazing spots to propose here, from on the beach, to on top of the rocks over looking the water, and even in the forested areas. You could even propose on a kayak or paddle board out in the water and truly make your engagement exactly how you envision it!!
Some other great beaches in Lake Tahoe include Zephyr Cove and Nevada Beach if you want to check those out!!

Valhalla Tahoe is a historic location to Lake Tahoe, located in south lake, and offers live events, weddings, and more! It has a stunning public dock that anyone can access, and a huge beach that is open to anyone as well — making it perfect for proposals. You can pop the question anytime of year, but I recommend off season or sunrise to avoid the crowds! Having the ability to park close, and use the dock has been a huge perk of proposing at Valhalla Tahoe.

For those craving something different, renting an Airbnb can be perfect for your proposal! Some beaches in Lake Tahoe are only accessible if you rent/own the property, this is why booking an Airbnb is such a great idea! You could get the entire place to yourselves to propose to your partner- what’s better than that?!

If you’re dreaming of something off the beaten path—maybe a secluded meadow, a private dock at a vacation cabin, or a scenic overlook known mostly to locals, I’ve got you covered. I know Lake Tahoe like the back of my hand, so I’d love to share some of my favorite spots for you to propose!
Whether it’s a mountaintop clearing you hike into, a hidden beach far from crowds, or even an epic lookout no one knows about, I’d love to share them with you!

Inquire and tell me all about what you’re envisioning, and I’ll help you plan and execute the proposal of your dreams!
After shooting multiple proposals and being a photographer in the Lake Tahoe region for over 8 years, and a lifetime local, I’d love to help you plan and capture your dream proposal!
Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty isn’t just something you experience—it’s a storybook setting for one of the most important chapters of your life. Whether on public shores, private woods, or historic estates, each location offers a stage for your unique love story.
If you’re drawn to a location not listed here—or want help orchestrating surprise transportation, decor, or photography—just reach out. I’d be honored to help craft the perfect proposal tailored just for you.
